Hello everyone! I’m Sporky McForkinspoon, the project’s editor/translation checker. It’s been a while, so I thought you all deserved an update on our progress. Things are going pretty well, and I think we’re on track to finish by the end of the year.
Here’s where we stand now:
Story:
The second round of story editing is basically done.
Translation: 100%
First Edit: 100%
Second Edit: 99%
NPCs:
Translation: 100%
First Edit: 35%
Second Edit: 35%
ASM:
100%, still no bugs discovered.
We’re at a fairly exciting point. Now that the story edit is done, we are inserting the translated text into the game. There are 294 .pack files in the ISO which contain all the text in the game, both the story and the NPCs, and they vary in size from a single line of text to several thousand words. On average, they take a couple hours each to insert, make any last wording changes we like, and make sure that all of the text fits in the box. To speed things up, I have started inserting text into the .pack files as I edit them the NPC text. Right now, we have 18 of them completely finished and ready for release. That means we’re about 6% done with that process, which is the most important number to watch right now. When we finish inserting the text, all that will be left is testing and checking for any spelling or grammar errors that we didn’t spot before.
As always, thanks a lot for your support.

@Shogunreaper: That wouldn’t be all that helpful. We really don’t make very many mistakes, and those we do can mostly be found by a good spell check program. Unfortunately, it takes a fair amount of skill to take a rough translation and turn it into an acceptable sounding version of the same text while maintaining the same meaning.
Granted, opening up the translated text to the public might attract more talented people to this project, but I don’t think it would help much. At the same time, publishing an unfinished version would almost certainly lead to a bunch of half baked, buggy patches being put out by third parties. Since those versions would still have our name on them, we would prefer simply to continue working as we have been, and release a version that we can be proud of.

@Faytofavalon and Nicholas McWilliams: I appreciate the thought, but we prefer not to accept donations. Partly this is because we feel a little weird about accepting money for something that hasn’t been released, but mostly because we’re way more likely to get sued if we take money. Still, thanks for offering, it’s nice to know that people are that willing to help with projects like these.

Love that you are so close to completely converting this game to English. I managed to get a Japanese copy of the game, and I must admit it is brilliant. Even if I cannot understand what anyone is saying.
I’m looking forward to see and playthrough your final edit to the game. Thank you so much for the work you’ve done on it.
I am curious on how and where you will post your final edit of the game, and I certainly hope that it won’t be on a torrent based download system.
Anyway, I suppose my real question is if it will be a patch installer type file or if you will re-release the iso with your edits.
In either case I am Of course curious what site(s) you will be posting them on.

And stalling? Since when have they stalled at all? Your post is entirely disrespectful to the team of this translation.

I should point out that seventeen of those files were done yesterday. That type of projection is inherently flawed. We were at eighteen files complete or several days while Romsstar was too busy to upload and organize more of them. Then, Kalker’s school went on vacation, and suddenly had more time to work on this. Some days are incredibly productive, while others see no movement on the progress bar.
At worst, I would expect a January release. Either way, it’s hardly stalling. We have always said that we would release this patch when and only when it was 100% complete. We are hopeful that we will be done by the end of the year. More than simply hoping in fact, we are working hard to make that hope a reality. Whether we meet that goal or not though, it’s not stalling to not be finished as soon as you would like us to be.

@Ignel: No, why would you assume that? It says in that post that it’s probably going to be some time around the end of the year, which is more than two weeks away.
@Wiezzenger: That depends on how you want to play the game. To use the patch we are releasing, you’ll need to have an ISO of the game. The only legal way to get that is to have a PSP with custom firmware on it, and to have bought the game. If you have both of those, just use an ISO creator like Active ISO Manager 2. Then you’ll use our patch, which you’ll download from here, and a program called XDelta GUI to apply the patch to the ISO. Lastly, you can either put that patched ISO on your PSP, or run it using an emulator.

Right at the moment, 44 are finished, including two largest. A lot of the ones we will be doing later are small sections from those two. Why they made extra packs with text written elsewhere I couldn’t tell you, but they did. We should have considerably more in a day or two, the bottleneck right now is that with Romsstar being busy with school, Kalker and I are finishing the packs faster than he can organize and upload new ones.
For those keeping score at home, 44/294 is just under 15% done.

I’d like to tell people not to assume it’s only a few months away. They’ve said, many times, that there’s a lot of factors to take in here, and anything could make it take from a few months, to many more months. Plus, they never said it would be exactly in a few months, they said they ‘wanted’ to get it out before the end of the year.

So I’m curious, will there be a way to apply this as a patch, for those of us who own the game on umd or will it have to be run from the modified iso? I know for me personally itd be preferable to apply translation patch/update to the game and keep just that on the memory card than the whole modified iso. Has any thought been put into this? Thanks for all your hard work and I look forward to playing with your translations!

gDMO is pretty bad, Joymax basically has been milking the game for all it’s worth, putting up tons of shit on Mall exclusively, and generally is pay to win. Thankfully there’s no PvP so you can’t just beat the crap out of other people with your “hard earned” mall bullshit.
kDMO, I’ve heard is a lot better, and fairly easier too (For some reason, gDMO decided they’d redo the item drop system.) But I’ve never tried it, numerous English patches exist for it though, from what I’ve heard.

Oh, wow. It’s already November, huh. I can’t say that this year went fast though. Too much stuff happened, even if I don’t remember them all I’m sure they’re there, so… Looking forward to 2015. (since Yen Press will release No Game No Life in English, which I’m definitely buying, not relevant btw)

I wouldn’t do anything with the recent “CFW” for 3DS, it was a leaked copy and therefore is extremely buggy.

Man, I’m in that time of the year in which I have a need for Digimon of some sort. I’d give japanese Re-digitize another playthrough, but I’m saving myself for the translation.
I loved all 3 Digimon Worlds of the PS1, but I’ve burned them so much by now. I need something to spice things up. If only Kimeramon in Tera Domain was true (So many years as a kid believin’…)
Anyway, I wish you all you can be satisfied with your work when the time for release finally comes. Saludos, from Argentina.

I don’t care when you are going to finish, take it easy guys.
You already put a life time worth of effort into this.
By the way, wouldn’t it be more efficient to double check the text for errors before inserting it? It seems quite troublesome to extract and re-insert text.

@kalker3. it goes way beyond that, November also has 8 letters, just like January, February and December. Which is equal to First, Second, Eleventh and Twelfth. Realize how amazing it is, from the 4 months with 8 letters, it’s the only one that equals to its ordinal form. Sugoii

@Meeman666: Sorry, your comment got eaten by the spam filter, so I didn’t see it until now. At this time there is no way to apply the patch to anything but an ISO of the game. The PS3 hacking scene has a plugin called Revolution that makes it possible to alter the game’s data on the fly via the system’s RAM, but an equivalent has not been made for the PSP.
One of our programmers, StorMyu, has talked about making one at some point, but as far as I know, never gotten any further than that. If such a plugin ever does get made, I would have no problem releasing a version of our patch compatible with it, but except perhaps for StorMyu, none of us has the skills or inclination to make that happen.

@Toffy: That’s more or less what we’re doing. I am opening the text files where we have stored the translated text, and the modified Falo tool that Romsstar made and simultaneously checking for errors as we insert the text. We could insert the text more quickly if we used the scripting tools to insert the text files automatically, but if we did, we would then need to check each line for errors separately, effectively adding an unnecessary step to the process.

A little of both. We definitely want to expand beyond Digimon games at some point, but then the things that we’re most excited to work on next are things like Digimon Adventure, and maybe Decode if the technology to do so comes along. So, probably just Digimon for now, but probably not forever.

All that said, I can’t wait to try this out. Major props to this group for dedicating so much time to translating a game for others to enjoy. I’ll be keeping tabs on this from here on out! Cheers!

I couldn’t do that, even if I were willing to. The technical reasons are somewhat complicated, but in essence, to insert the translated text that we have created over the last couple of years requires that we do so more or less manually. There is an automatic option, but even if we use it, we still have to make sure that things fit correctly into the text boxes if you want to be able to read it. We’re doing that as quickly as we can, and the only way to speed up that process would be to not do any spelling or wording checks as we do so, and I don’t think that would make the process significantly faster. So, sorry, you’ll have to wait.

What Sporky is essentially trying to say, even if they’ve translated the game entirely, they haven’t inserted the new text into the game. Just begging for a release is essentially just asking for the Japanese version with English Menus, and the first chapter or so in English (Similar to the already existing Digimon Adventure translation!).
Quit bugging them, seriously, they shouldn’t have to keep telling people that they don’t want to release something unfinished.

^ Pretty much that. If we released what is already inserted and ready to ship, you’d get the first chapter, most of the NPCs in the city, and at various points in the plot some of the cutscenes are translated. We have way more of that translated, but it’s all in .txt files right now.

Geez, if you’re all worried about BANDAI then simply stop asking for progress reports. After all, if the project is “dead” they won’t search for the responsible. Cheer them as much as you want. Praise them to your heart content. But stop asking for info that you have no use for.

Hey guys, I thought you’d want to know that we hit a bit of a snag. When Romsstar started testing the most recent version of the patch, he found that the game freezes any time you open the items menu. He’s working on it, and hopefully it will be resolved quickly, but this could potentially be one of those things that requires us to push the release date. I’ll keep you updated.

I enjoyed the Rumble series honestly, I mean it could have been better, but it was still enjoyable IMO. But the All Stars game… looks really bad, the only way I’d buy it, is to support Digimon as a whole.
Anyhow, about the snag, it’s fine honestly. Shit happens, we just gotta deal with it, nothing we can do but wait. If the release date gets pushed back, then it gets pushed back. Nothing ever goes smoothly in development.

Thanks Rai. I wouldn’t worry too much about it for now, it’s not the same department as the editors, so we can work on the problem in parallel. It’s only likely to be an issue if it isn’t something that can be quickly resolved. Romsstar says he has determined that the problem stems from the insertion tool that Roxas from the GBATemp forum made, and that sections of it will have to be rewritten. We had a similar problem once before, and CompCom was able to quickly sort it out. We’ll still probably ship on time, but I like to be on the level with everyone.

I like this kind of update with the estimated percent complete. I see there’s some updates in the comments; would you mind putting out a new update with new estimates, and include the news on the snag? I think that will get highest visibility and be the most helpful for folks trying to see the latest by digging through comments. Thanks for the great work guys! I’m glad there are people out there who want English Digimon games as much as I do!
