Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!

While I’m sure many of our readers were disappointed by my last post, I’m very grateful for the way you guys have shown support for us despite the delay. So we want to show you that your support is appreciated, and that we haven’t forgotten about our loyal fans out there, still waiting for the Re:Digitize patch, and since it’s Christmas, we thought that today calls for a present.

And we got you one ;) Without any further adieu, I hereby announce our next project, which we will start work on immediately following Re:Digitize. It is none other than its worthy successor for the 3DS: Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode.

This project was on our minds the second Decode was announced, and I’m glad to inform you everyone that now we have the means to actually bring you the translation for this wonderful game.

Please take a look at the following video:

High Resolution Download

Now obviously this is to be considered as a first draft, with things subject to change, but I hope this is a sufficient proof of concept demonstration to show that a translation of a 3DS game is indeed possible. I also hope that the video is sufficient proof that this is definitely real and not a fake. Please also take this as a sign that we’re really close to the finish line with Re:Digitize.

There are certain things worth noticing about this video. First, we have been able to successfully insert edited images, as you can see in the battle menus and such. But moreover, and most importantly, we successfully ported over our Re:Digitize translation to Decode (only the strings that are a 100% match with the original), which means that a substantial amount of work is done already. However, please understand that Decode is HUGE and not a simple port. Decode is at least twice the length of the PSP game, and as such will definitely take some time to translate.

Enjoy, and have a merry Christmas, everyone!

As soon as I got the email I rushed over to thank you guys! Seriously, I signed the decode petition back around the same time I started following this translation project (oct. ’13) I was getting seriously bummed at bamco, but with you great folks on the job, I can gladly wait a few more years if necessary. can’t wait to see this project completed and the next as well, this is the best Christmas present a digimon fan could wish for! Have a merry Christmas and new year, and take as much time as you need to recoup from the holidays.

I wonder, are this 3ds game gonna be able to cross region? Since , all of flash card not able to play cross region game or simulate region . But, still a big surprise. Happy holidays all and travel safely.

@Napi: If you have a Gateway compatible 3DS (currently only 3DSs with version 4.1-4.5 firmware, but that’s supposed to change in the next few days), you can play any game from any region. The 3DS XL in the video (mine) is a US model, but it’s playing a Japanese game.

  29. Sporky McForkinspoon Says:

@Anonymous: No, there is no such thing as a working 3DS emulator. Although several groups are trying to make one, none have gotten very far.

@John: I’ll talk to everyone about it, I have no objection once we finish the English version, but they’re not my tools, so we’ll see.

@SHSLTorturer: You’ll need a flashcart, Gateway was the first company to make one, and they tend to have the most up to date features, but there are clones.

@Juho: They’re almost completely different games, File Island is almost twice as large as it was in Re:Digitize, there are two more human characters in the story, and the story itself is about three times as long as it was in Re:Digitize. Plus there’s a bunch of new Digimon you can evolve to.

@Richard Criscione: You’ll need a 3DS and a flashcart, those currently run only on 3DSs with firmware between versions 4.1-4.5, but that is expected to change in the next few days. From there, you’ll use XDelta, the same patching tool you’ll need for the PSP version, and a ROM of Decode, which you can get by going in to Gateway mode with the Decode cartridge in the slot and backing it up.

    Like

  30. Huntar Says:

Pretty excited to see this announcement. I really hope that the flash carts open up significantly in the future though, since older FW 3DSs are getting pretty rare, and I’m not exactly excited about buying a new one anyway.

Still, I’m glad that the 3DS version will be available in English eventually, even if I can’t personally play it.

wait, is 3ds hacked already ? can we play hacked games on 3ds ? :o
if it is can someone teach me how to do it ?

anyway great work!! i’m looking forward for both translations, godspeed for you guys!

    Like

  32. Sporky McForkinspoon Says:

@Huntar: In the next few days Gateway says they’ll be releasing version 2.8 of their software, which should work on all 3DSs running 4.1-9.2, so if you have a 3DS and you haven’t updated it in the last month or so you should be fine.

@Toronto: That depends on what you mean. The 3DS can be made to play games off a flashcart relatively easily, you just need a Gateway and a 3DS running the right firmware. Playing a translated or otherwise hacked game is relatively easy as well, you just get a ROM, and apply a patch to it, then play it like any other game on the cart. Hacking the games themselves to create a translation patch is quite difficult, and CompCom is the only person that I am aware of who has made a complete set of tools to hack any game, and those will only work on Decode unless they are modified for each game.

@Gekigami you seem to be confused, one of the first things mentioned in this post was that the 3DS game was to be their next project after they finished re:digitize the psp game.

So no this announcement in no way implies that they suddenly decided to stop work on the psp version, which from the sound of things is pretty much 99% done at this point anyway so dropping it now would be lunacy.

We said so in the post itself, but since people clearly can’t read it, this video was a simple proof of concept. CompCom made the insertion tools, and we ported the strings that are identical from the PSP version to the 3DS version, and then did a small amount of additional translating to make Jijimon’s speech about the Twitter clone appear in English. We really didn’t spend a lot of time on this, and our first priority remains the PSP version for the time being.

Given that Decode will take us at least a year to translate, it seems foolish to worry about what we’ll work on next at this point. @Greymon: We don’t accept and don’t particularly want money for our work, and have not accepted it when others have asked to donate.

We have not broken any promises. I direct you again to all of my recent blog posts and the comments therein in which I stated in no uncertain terms that although we were going to try to release by the end of December, it was distinctly possible that that would not be possible. When we knew we would not be able to meet our goal (which, again, was not a promise) we were forthright about why we could not do so. You are no worse now than if we had simply not said anything and released when we were done, but we thought people would be excited to know how much progress we have made.

To anyone else who would like to donate, I still don’t want and cannot accept your money. However, if you feel so inclined, pick a charity and make a donation in the name of a staff member, such as Sporky McForkinspoon, Romsstar, or CompCom, and let us know about it here. That would be really great of you.

Anonymous@ How about you go translate the whole game yourself, then? Since you’d be faster, you’d might be able to complete translating the game quickly. Stop whining like a spoiled brat. They’re trying their best, but something a lot more important than your entertainment called “Life” also needs to be focused on.

I really don’t think you have any comprehension of how long translating a game takes, if you’re calling us slow. This project is about two years old, and done by a skeleton crew compared to official translations. Add to that everyone involved has to also work a job, and most of us also go to school, some weeks we simply can’t spare a lot of hours to work on this. But you know something, we love doing it. Translating is fun for us, and if I could, I would forgo my job and school to do it.

Romsstar’s release date statement there was premature, and in retrospect was regretful. However, we’re going to be very close to the intended release, and the delay was due to things happening that were beyond our control. Would you prefer that we lie and say it was due to technical problems? Or release a buggy patch, like the FF Type 0 team did, to meet the arbitrary deadline? Perhaps more to the point, in what way are you worse now than if we hadn’t created a blog at all, and said absolutely nothing until we were done? You would have had to wait just as long, probably longer, since several members of staff, myself included, came onto the team as a result of seeing the blog.

Let me tell you something, as much as I enjoy translating games, and as much as I like most of the community here, statements like yours and Greymon’s kind of make me want to take my ball and go home. We could just not release, give the patch only to our friends, and ask them not to distribute it. We won’t, because for every troll comment we get ten more that are great, but I really wish there was a DRM that could prevent assholes from playing the game.

And I heard of some translation teams who released partial translation patches. It would have alleviated the problem, but I’m fine if you didn’t want to / couldn’t do that. It’s just, with the internet, you can never really be sure of anything~

Anyway, let’s forget about that thing. Happy new year in advance, I never played a Digimon game before, so Re:Digitize will be my first and I really look forward to it. So keep up the good work guys.

A partial patch isn’t really an option Kaiminus. With the way things have played out, we have a great deal of translated work that needs to be inserted into files, a process that takes some time since we have to adjust for the line breaks or you can’t actually read them when the game tries to display the text. If we went ahead and did that without making the final round of editing to the text that we have been doing as we go through, it would take about ninety percent as long, and make the final release take a good deal longer since we would have to do it again as we finished editing the files.

But you’re right, I’m going to stop feeding the troll, and delete posts instead from here on.

I don’t like doing that, I’m generally not a fan of censorship even on my own site, but until now we have had a great community here, and I’d like to see everything stay civil.

  140. Sporky McForkinspoon Says:

In terms of the plot, the ending is great, definitely not what I was expecting. In terms of what I liked working on, really, the things I remember most fondly are the times when I had an evening off, I’d turn on an audio book or a television show in one corner of the screen, fix myself a drink, and then solve the fascinating puzzle of having a story in Japanese or a rough English translation, and figuring out the best way to present it in English. That, and the friends I’ve made, we work pretty closely together, and I don’t think we could work together like that for an extended period without coming to know and like each other quite well. A few of us are going to meet up this summer, and I’m really looking forward to it.

The up side is that our tools are all already made, and we won’t have to stop for months while we figure out the insertion process. We have also been able to port the matching strings from the PSP version to Decode, but that’s only about 20% of the total. On the technical side, the PSP is somewhat easier, since emulators and debuggers already exist, which makes ASM hacking far easier. Translating the text itself is no easier and no harder, but there’s a lot more of it in Decode.

All together, I would guess it will take a least a year to do Decode, and there’s a definite possibility it will take longer.
